How to turn reality into film? For the second consecutive year, SIFF teams up with the Onassis Cultural Centre/Onassis Foundation to bring the Cinemascope film workshop to Syros’s aspiring filmmakers. This year the lab explores the space between documentary and fiction as the two mingle to create an entirely unique film. Participants seek out stories from Syros itself, interviewing family and friends and then revising these tales using provided cameras and editing tools. The resulting short film is screened in the last days of the festival. Suggested age of the workshop participants is 12-17 years old.
A central goal of the workshop is to encourage the collection and research of local histories, using sound and film recordings to interview relatives and friends with personal knowledge of past events on Syros. Just as the central festival program examines the meaning of revision in cinema, we ask participants to revise these personal histories into film.
