In Soviet Svanetia, horses have to make space for a steam engine and nature has to be exchanged for machines. An underseen masterpiece of early ethnographic cinema (and Soviet propaganda), which documents with visual bravado the harsh conditions of life in the isolated mountain village of Ushkul.
