The exhibition SIFF Exposed presents twenty photographs by Myrto Tzima taken over the past four summers in the context of the Syros International Film Festival (SIFF).
The act of documenting this specific festival surpasses the needs of cultural events focused on a daily social media presence and the extensive documentation of events and activities. The hundreds of snapshots gathered over several years by the photographer comprise a unique archive, revealing SIFF’s distinct character: the selection here reflects the multi-format coexistence of image and sound, space and time, human and natural environment. The photographer, making use of the tools of her art, in a constant balancing act between the eternal and the ephemeral, works with a wide range of digital and analogue media in order to express the often surreal experience of being a viewer and a listener, a participant and co-conspirator of SIFF.
Hermoupolis, like the island of Syros as a whole, is a palimpsest of places and images. Over the course of several July evenings, the former quarry, the beach, an abandoned tannery, Dellagrazia, the shipyard, and the hills of Ano Meria come into conversation with films, artists and projectors — and with us, as we wander through the space separating light from darkness.
