Opening Ceremony with the Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine

SIFF kicked off 2016 with an opening performance by the Cellule d’Intervention Metamkine in Hermoupolis’ historic Apollon theater.

In commemoration of the passing of Tony Conrad, legendary figure of the avant-garde, SIFF presented FLICKER: An Evening for Tony Conrad — an all-night event of flickering films and musical performances, celebrating just a small part of the legacy across art forms that Conrad left behind.

Held in the ruins on Syros’ former tannery, the all-night circus of dreams featured musical performances by Jerome Noetinger, Mike Cooper and Alyssa Moxley, and films from Tony Conrad, Pip Chodorov, Paul Sharits, Steina & Woody Vasulka, Esther Urlus, Marcel Duchamp, Rainer Kohlberger and Siegfried Frauhuf.

Watching Science: Films for Experiments

As part of the program Watching Science: Films for Experiments, screened beneath the trees of the Agios Athanasios churchyard at night, SIFF presented its own found-footage compilation of ‘abstract’ imagery culled from the NASA public domain archives, accompanied by a live score from the inimitable Mike Cooper.

Watch "SPACE JUNK: Selections from the NASA Archives"

Moving images continue to open up new worlds and constellations. Cameras in space capture and reanimate unseeable worlds across a spectrum of light invisible to the human eye.

Here we present a selection from the public archives of NASA space programs—images from solar and planetary instruments such as the Solar Dynamics Observatory, MAVEN, and Fermi, whose unprecedented scientific observations find beautiful contradiction in the visual force of their near-abstraction.

Beamed down from space, these videos also possess a unique weight to their imagery: pictures from a vacuum, they are some of the only movie-recordings without any association, any possible intrusion, of sound.
